The Swale Trail

The Swale Trail a 12 mile mostly off road cycle trail officially opened today and Karen was one of the first 6 to cycle it on a fantastic ebike from
the Dales Bike Centre in Fremington. The trail which starts at the Dales Bike Centre  weaves it way up Swaledale through Gunnerside and on
to Keld. The Yorkshire Dales National Parkhas invested heavily in making this track bike friendly especially along the banks of the Swale and the
path leading up from Eas Gill Force at Keld, making it much better for walkers too!

Every Barn Tells A Story

Ever wondered why there are so many barns in Swaledale??

Today we spent a fabulous day in Muker creating enormous cows and a sheepdog made from wicker to become giant lanterns. The cow lanterns will form a procession in Keld next month in an event the Yorkshire Dales National Park has arranged for the community as a thank you for their participation in the Every Barn Tells a Story project.

Update……. Check out the full story here everybarn.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ghost-cow-night-photos and take a look at the magical ghost cow celebrations.

Muker Show and a Cheese Festival

The Muker Show held on the first Wednesday of September was again a fabulous success. There was a fantastic number of entries in the Show tent which showed off what amazing talent we have in the Dales along with some great visitor entries too! And talking of visitors the Fell Race included a runner on holiday from Mauritius!! The Yorkshire Dales National Park talked through their project ‘Every barn tells a story’ and our Jess & Billie got a 2nd each (again) in their ‘Working Dog type’ show class. We had a good sing-a-long outside the Farmers Arms and then back to the newly refurbished and warm (thanks to our new woodburner) Reading Room at the Village Hall for a Community Evening of sharing our award winning (or not!!) exibits and entries to the show.

The Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival 23rd to 30th September a whole week celebrating cheese!! Starting at the Wensleydale Creamery (where better to start a Cheese Festival??) followed by all sorts of events happening at some great venues all over the National Park. Hay time and Agriculture Shows

Nearly through August and the weather hasn’t been exactly would we and the farms would hope for! There just hasn’t been very many consecutive days of fine dry weather to cut, dry and bale the hay. However it’s not entirely a washout and it’s good to look out today and see and smell the lovely cut grass being baled up.

August also sees the many Agricultural Shows taking place and while we wait for the Muker show in September we decided to head off to visit the Kilsney Show. We had a fantasic day watching the sheep trials, seeing the champion sheep in their pens and tasting some wonderful local produce. The day finished with a different kind of sheep show which was hilarous! Take a look at thesheepshow.co.uk
